MgO Panel Benefit: Structural Strength

1–2 minutes

MgO panels offer strong structural performance in the sheathing category. Their MgO cement composition allows them to perform comparably to OSB and plywood, while outperforming gypsum-based panels in load-bearing and structural applications.

Built for Strength and Versatility

  • Single-layer subfloor solution: 3/4″ MgO panels replace multiple layers of other materials, reducing complexity, labor, and material costs.
  • High-impact durability: Panels resist dents, scratches, and damage during handling and installation.
  • Eliminates excess bracing: The structural strength of MgO panels often removes the need for additional blocking or reinforcement.
  • Cladding-ready: In many assemblies, light to mid-weight cladding systems can be attached directly to qualifying 1/2″ MgO panels – no need to fasten back to studs.

Impressive Flexural Strength

Flexural strength – or a panel’s ability to resist bending and deformation – is where MgO panels shine:

  • 1/2″ Panels: Deliver flexural strength commonly above 14 MPa in both wet and dry conditions – among the highest in the sheathing industry.
  • Multiple layers of fiberglass mesh add to their superior load-handling performance.

This structural integrity makes them ideal for high-traffic environments, impact-prone interiors, and areas subject to frequent wear and tear. And for those replacing interior drywall, many MgO panels are fully compatible with traditional finishing materials like joint compound, tape, and paint – while offering far greater abuse resistance.

Fastener Performance You Can Count On

MgO panels offer superior fastener holding and withdrawal values that make them an ideal product for structural sheathing:

  • Some MgO panels offer direct cladding attachment to 1/2″ panels. This benefit eliminates expensive mounting systems like rails or girts for most applications.
  • ½” MgO panels may be an ideal alternative to 5/8″ exterior gypsum panels – delivering greater strength and weather resistance in a lighter, more versatile solution.
  • Some 3/4″ MgO panels can support 24″ spans without blocking, saving substantial time, materials, and cost.
