MgO panels are commonly approved as a part of fire-rated assemblies with some meeting stringent requirements for noncombustibility. This fire resistance makes them ideal for buildings that must meet strict fire codes – especially Type I and II construction, as well as fire-rated assemblies in Type III through V buildings.
MgO panels often meet or exceed leading fire-resistance standards:
- ASTM E136: Non-combustibility
- ASTM E84: Class A Flame Spread & Smoke Development
- ASTM E119: 1 and 2-hour fire-resistance ratings in multiple structural wall configurations
Thanks to their high thermal tolerance, MgO panels remain stable up to 1,200°F (649°C) – significantly beyond the failure point of traditional drywall, which degrades around 250°F (121°C), and wood sheathing, which may combust around 400°F (204°C).
Benefits in Fire Events:
- Do not emit toxic gases when heated
- Help maintain structural integrity by charring (not burning)
- Delay flame spread and provide more time for evacuation
- Improve occupant and firefighter safety through low smoke formation
These properties make MgO panels a superior choice for critical fire-rated construction, including:
- Fire-resistance-rated walls and ceilings
- Exterior building envelopes
- Mechanical and utility rooms
- High-occupancy and multi-family dwellings
Many MgO panels not only meet today’s building code requirements – they help exceed them.
