How to choose the right MgO panel

1–2 minutes

Not all MgO panels are built to the same standards. Their reliability depends on formulation, quality control, and third-party testing. Here’s how to make an informed selection:

Work with Credible Suppliers and Manufacturers Who:

  • Adhere to recognized standards, such as ICC 1125 and AC 386.
  • Undergo third-party audits and certifications from ICC-ES, Intertek, IAPMO, or similar.
  • Conduct independent QA testing:
    • MgO panels should undergo rigorous lab testing before they leave the factory.
    • MgO panels can be visually inspected during packaging to ensure consistency and quality.

Look for Panels That Offer:

  • Verified third-party code compliance (use the ICC-ES Reports Directory to check for approvals).
  • Documentation proving corrosion and fire performance benchmarks.
  • Clear, complete installation instructions and user-friendly technical support.

Common Types of MgO Panels

Today’s MgO panel market is primarily divided between two core formulations: magnesium oxychloride (MOC) and magnesium oxysulfate (MOS). The key difference lies in the bonding agents used – chloride-based salts for MOC, and sulfate-based salts for MOS.

While both MOC and MOS panels offer superior fire resistance and structural performance compared to traditional materials like gypsum and OSB, they each offer nuanced benefits compared to one another.
